My legal experience: legal AI
Hi there! Here you can find information about my work experience and skills related to such a beautiful crossing of law and technologies as Legal AI. Feel free to call me with any related issues and do not forget to check new posts in my blog.
Work experience
As we know, there are software and algorihtms, data and databases under the hood of AI models and AI-based services. A lot of them may be regarded as intellectual property.
My work experience is a 12+ years everyday work with intellectual property, including tasks related to databases and software (and open source too), information security, EULAs and ToS, patents, identifying and mitigating legal risks, commercialization IP rights.
In respect of them, the are several examples of such my work related to machine learning and AI:
- Open source: I helped to release the source code of Catboost and ClickHouse, I also led to set up OSS compliance process (licenses audit, CLAs, etc.);
- Software development: drafting and negotiating outsourcing agreements (e.g., to create Neuromusic), software licenses (including for testing purposes);
- Databases: legal support to acquire databases (including drafting agreements to make deals);
- Control the use of AI: drafting terms for an agreement to control the use of AI by a contractor during the work (writing engineering and technical documentation).
Legal AI
Legal AI is one of my professional interests and seems to be one of the most challenging and exciting frontiers on the intersection of laws and technologies. As addition to be mentioned above, there are some examples of my work in this way:
- Legal databases: I developed my own legal database Kardamon (court practice on domain disputes);
- Legal translation: I tranlsate into Russian interesting and actual materials related to AI and legal issues;
- Teaching experience: see the details below;
- Academic writing: I write learning materials for lawyers about how to build their own legal databases and their visualisations, which issues need to be solved to build their own legal systems (e.g. AI-powered).
Courses, trainings and learning process are an integral part of any legal practice. There is the information, how I improve the level of my expertise on legal issues related to AI.
Teaching
- I developed the course "Legal Protection of Software And Databases" for Master's Degree program "Intellectual Property Rights, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies" and provided lectures at Moscow State University (2021/2022);
- I also developed lectures on legal issues of reverse engineering, software vulnerabilities, databases and data marketplaces, EULAs and ToS, etc. for "The IT Lawyer" and "The Data Lawyer" courses at Moscow Digital School (2021-2024).
Courses
I completed (without certification) this course and highly recommend it to everyone who is interested in AI, computaional law, databases, etc.:
